Berseem clover is a spring-seeded nitrogen-fixing annual legume, with 100-180 lbs. of N/acre available in the plant’s biomass.
Seeding Rate (lbs. / acre)
- Drill: 8-15
- Broadcast: 12-20
- In a mix: 3-6
– Planting depth: 1/8”–1/4”
– Approximate seeds/lb: 130,000 (coated)
– Days to germination: 7
Berseem Clover Benefits & Info
- Known for its outstanding seedling vigor & rapid growth
- Good nitrogen producer
- Works well following wheat harvest
- Works well in a cover crop mix
- Tolerates waterlogged soils & saline environments better than alfalfa or red clover (pH 4.8–7.8)
- Normally winterkills in northern climates
- Frosty® Berseem Clover offers improved winter tolerance (survives in the fall to 5°F)
Forage Considerations
- Berseem clover is a cool-season, non-bloating annual clover (contains tannins that prevent bloat in livestock)
- Can be utilized as hay or grazed multiple times (before blooming)
- Hollow stems allow for quicker hay-drying
- Great companion with alfalfa to improve yield and forage quality for one season; feeds similar to alfalfa
- Can produce a lot of tonnage, as seen below.
